Happy Leap Year Day! It's a tradition (in Ireland and Britain anyway) that on Leap Year Day, the woman may propose marriage by only in a Leap Year! If a marriage proposal was refused by the man, compensation was deemed to be a pair of leather gloves, a single rose, $1, and a kiss. In Greece, it is considered unlucky to marry in a Leap Year and some would actually avoid marriage in that year. The owners of 5 Star, Debbie & Lloyd Little, were actually married this day, 40 years ago! Debbie says it was a premeditated plan by her smart husband to only have to buy her an anniversary gift every 4 years (haha). She says that's okay though, because she married the man of her dreams. It is a bit chilly today in the Red River Gorge Geological Area. Winter has finally found us! We're supposed to have some absolutely frigid temperatures in the next few days! Despite the temperatures, there is still a lot to see at Natural Bridge and the Red River Gorge this time of year. You can see the Red River Gorge without even leaving the comfort of your warm car! There is a forty-five to sixty minute driving loop you can use to see all the wonderful sights of the Gorge! You can drive through Nada Tunnel, a man-made tunnel that a train used to go through! We still have the 'Celebration Promo' running through the months of January and February. All you have to do is call our office and book two nights in a cabin and you can receive a third night for free! Your stay must be consecutive, cannot fall on a holiday weekend or weekday (Valentine's Day or President's Day), and can only be used on new reservations only. We also have the 'Be My Valentine' promo as well. If you book two nights for Valentine's Day weekend, you could receive your third night for only $98.00! The cold weather has found us, even if it's just for a few days. We even had snow flurries yesterday that covered part's of the area & surrounding counties. It sure is a lovely day here in Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge. Would be a wonderful day for a hike. Some of my favorite place to hike are Sky bridge, Chimney Top Rock and Princess Arch. All are pretty short but are worth it. The views are incredible. Also don't forget about Nada Tunnel. Below you will find a picture of the tunnel. Can you believe that trains use to go thru there???

Today is beautiful! The temperature and blue skies together make for a perfect day. It feels more like Fall today. It's a perfect day to visit The Red and do some hiking. I personally am very excited for fall to arrive. It doesn't get much better than that around here. It sure is a beautiful day here in Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge. Not to hot there's a nice breeze blowing. A perfect day for a hike. So what are you waiting for come on down and see us. It's been so busy here in the Red River Gorge the last couple of weekends! July is our second busiest month of the year, and we love it! It's so exciting to meet all of the new people that come down for their first time and also very exciting to see our return customers.
There is only a week or two left of summer break so be sure to visit your favorite vacation place before time is up! Speaking of hiking, I had the luxury of take a hike over the weekend. I did the balanced rock trail at Natural Bridge State Park. It is a beautiful hike that takes you up to the Natural Bridge. You get to see a lot of nice sights. It's not that long of a hike either I want to say roughly a mile.
Also don't forget about our Wild Things of KY gift shop, where you can see a live animal display which includes snakes, turtles, spiders and lots more. Then when you get done going thru that browse our gift shop where we have lots to choose from. Including homemade fudge, t-shirts, jewelry, and lots more. Then we have our goats on a roof. Which I must say is a lot of fun, the little goats are so cute and love love love to eat. So stop by and give them a nice little snack that you can purchase inside the gift shop.
Then once your done doing all that your going to need a place to sit back and relax. That's where we come in. Our cabins have a lot to offer, hot tubs, fire pits, grills, fully equipped kitchens, pool tables. That just a few amenities to mention. So if you need something to do this weekend come one down. Check out the pictures I posted of a little black bear! They were sent to me just this morning from one of our guests in a cabin. They said "it was quite the wake up call!" These guests made my day with these pictures. Such a beautiful animal! I had heard that we'll be seeing a lot more sightings in the next few years! I think that's so exciting!

There are lots of people out and about enjoying the day! This article that I found explains the Red River Gorge & Natural Bridge area in a wonderful way. It's certainly a nice read and describes the Gorge beautifully. I highly recommend taking time of your day to check it out! I'm so glad I found it! For people who have never been to this area, it gives a great sense of what it's like. I'm definitely proud to call this place home.

We're down to only 18 days left until the first day of Spring! The Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge area is really starting to pick back up! With that being said, some of our seasonal businesses are opening up for season soon and we are so excited! The awesome Miguel's Pizza opened back up for season on February 27th, and the cool Red River Rockhouse will be opening up for season this week on March, 5th! Come on down and enjoy some of Red River Rockhouse's delicious burgers or some of Miguel's sundry pizza toppings! The Sky lift at the Natural Bridge will be opening up on March 28th! Talk about a beautiful sight!
April will be an exciting month for the Wild Things of Kentucky! Our gem & gold mines opens up for season and our "Goats on the Roof" will return! Fill up an ice cream cone full of goat food and send it up to them, they love it! Wild Things of Kentucky has a new contemporary outhouse open to the public also coming the first of April! Whether you have "to go" or not, be sure to stop by and visit Ernie the bathroom attendant. This outhouse is the first of its kind in Kentucky and probably the whole US! The nature center is open everyday, so stop by and see some creepy crawlers or just take a look at the gift shop that has some of the most unique merchandise in the area.
It's also time again for the Natural Bridge State Resort Park's monthly First Friday Seafood Buffet! It will be served this Friday March 6th from 4:00 - 8:00 PM! If visiting, you can enjoy crab legs, fried shrimp, clam strips, fried catfish, baked Alaska and much more! Yummy!
For something exciting to do in the Red River Gorge, on March 21st at the Gladie Visitor Center, they'll be having "Building for Bluebirds". This free event is fun for all ages and helps provide nesting areas for bluebirds. Build your box and take it home to help bluebirds in your area!
All of these awesome things are opening up just in time for spring break! I'm not sure about where you are, but here at Natural Bridge & Red River Gorge, we're being covered up by snow today! We hadn't had much a winter at all this season, but it's definitely making up for it now! We're already up to around 5 inches and a lot more accumulation is expected!
